Maizie’s Musings: My Ears…

My ears are, as the humans say, a “mixed bag.” On the one side they get lots of petting. The mom person says that I have the softest ears of any dog she has ever known. (Like she knows so many!) There’s this person that looks kinda like the mom person, but she is doesn’t have as many creases in her face and she’s owned by the big black dog that goes with me to that place with all the trees I like to sniff.

Even that person says I have really soft ears, too. So, if I really want to love on my people, I put my ears closest to them, knowing they will eventually succumb to their softness. If they don’t get the message, I nudge those ears closer to their hands. I also do this if they stop succumbing to them. Sometimes I get in trouble for this if I do it for too long.

That doesn’t stop me. I just move on to the next human. Sooner or later they all pet the ears.

Even when the weather outside makes me pant a lot, I still like to go outside and lay in my yard. Unfortunately, my ears can get very itchy when I do this. I don’t really know why.

I have to be careful because if I itch them too much with my back paws, the mom or dad person come at me with the infamous wet stuff and put that awful stuff in my ears. Don’t they know that it’s hard to hear when your ears are submerged in wet stuff??? They even rub my ears to make sure it goes even farther into my ears.

But I will say that if they do this enough, my ears do get less itchy eventually, so I allow it…under protest. I try to look extra pathetic when they’re done putting it in so I will get my favorite bacon treats. Notice I said plural there. One is not going to do it and if they stop at one, I give them the pathetic look again. It’s hard to do because I really love my bacon treats, so it’s tough to manage the pathetic look twice, but I’m a good actress.

The mom person says she has caught on to this acting, though. She says that my size and weight tell the truth. I don’t know what she’s talking about. She’s just weird.

Perhaps the best thing about my ears is that they also have different moods and emotions. I have a certain way of cocking them when I want to play with my toys that the mom person says makes me look a lot younger than my current middle age. And when my ears are laid back against my head, the mom person says that I look scared and nervous.

I doubt sincerely that I ever look scared and nervous. The mom person says that my ears get this way when other dogs come around. I’m not scared or nervous–it’s just that those dogs tend to eat my kibble, drink my water and hide my bones and toys. Since I have a lot of toys and bones, I can’t seem to keep those sneaky dogs away from everything at once. So what she thinks is scared and nervous is really annoyed and frustrated.

Thankfully, the mom person put those bacon treats on top of the refrigerator. Even the black dog can’t get to them there. Now if I could only climb to the top of that refrigerator myself. I have tried this when the people are all gone at once, but my stomach gets in the way and I haven’t learned how to climb on things very well. Even barking at the bacon treats doesn’t make them come down.

I think I’m starting to understand what the mom person means about my size and weight.
