YOUR Top 10 of MIP 2014: 8 & 7…

Happy New Year!

Happy New Year!

Since we are having the Compassion Counseling Center Ribbon-Cutting Ceremony today, I am late at sending you this post! So, so sorry! But, I hope you will pray for the success of Compassion even in spite of my tardiness today. As of today, 3000+ people know about Compassion; we have close to 180 Likes on Facebook; and we have scheduled our first 5 appointments! We begin “business” tomorrow! Thanks to all of you who have prayed and supported this endeavor to reach the hurting in my area.

The “Odd Days” series was a pretty popular part of MIP in 2014. What are the Odd Days posts?  I researched the weird holidays in the U.S. that few of us know about and offered some sarcastic and silly thoughts on each month’s bizarre commemorations of various forms of Americana. So, if you’d like to take a look at such strangeness one more time, go here to read the “Odd Days of January 2014.”

Two more of my “Keeping Your New Year’s Resolutions” posts made it into your Top 10 for MIP in 2014 and # 7 was the “inaugural post” for that series. So, if you struggle with keeping your resolve to do better in the new year, then perhaps this post will shed a little light on how to do that a little better. But, even if not, know that I’ve struggled with this as well and I “feel your pain!” Go here to read this inaugural post.

The Odd Days of September…

Politician perks

Politician perks

Several of the “adopteds” are September babies, including my very own oldest child. Thus, September has become a favorite month for me. Here are some reasons, according to holidayinsight.com, why you might want to celebrate birthdays as opposed to these occasions:

September 1st – Emma Nutt Day (1st woman phone operator)  – So glad her name wasn’t Squirrel.

September 3rd – Skyscraper Day – We have so many of those here in Podunk, USA.

September 4th – Newspaper Carrier Day – I plan to throw newsprint in my holly bushes this day.

September 5th – Be Late for Something Day – And that would be why I’m writing this a few hours before “deadline.” If you believe that, I have a bridge in Brooklyn I’d like to sell you. It’s near a skyscaper.

September 5th – Cheese Pizza Day – Is it legal to add pepperoni? If so, I’m never late for pizza.

The Odd Days of July…

Book Club Readers: Are you finished with # 6 of Songs in the Key of SolomonNo? That’s okay! It’s a very quick read. Get busy and start reading now!

Some months I don’t even need to comment on the holidays that somehow got onto the calendar. This would be one of those months. Read on to see what I mean, based on holidayinsights.com:

July 1st – Canada Day – Does that mean that Canada has a U.S. Day, eh?

July 2nd – World UFO Day – Remind me to stay away from Area 51 today.

July 3rd – Compliment Your Mirror Day – I never knew my mirror had an inferiority complex.

July 4th – Sidewalk Egg Frying Day – Unless you live in Canada.

July 5th – Work-a-Holics Day – Otherwise known, at my house, as Father’s Day

July 6th – National Fried Chicken Day – Since 7/4’s odd holiday precedes this odd holiday, we have now effectively answered which came first.

July 7th – Chocolate Day – It goes well with your sidewalk egg and fried chicken?

July 8th – Video Games Day – If you have a teen, this is every day.

July 9th – National Sugar Cookie Day – Yay! I always want to decorate Santa cookies in July.

July 10th – Teddy Bear Picnic Day – I don’t usually invite bears to my picnics.

July 11th – World Population Day – Are we supposed to procreate this day????

July 12th – Different Colored Eyes Day – Probably instituted by some woman who was “seeing red” one day and was “green with jealousy” the next day.

July 13th – Embrace Your Geekness Day – So that means The Big Bang Theory is on, right?

July 14th – National Nude Day – I don’t recommend celebrating this holiday at work.

July 15th – Cow Appreciation Day – Not to be confused with Cow Tipping Appreciation Day.

July 16th – Fresh Spinach Day – Remind me to make a date with Popeye.

July 17th – Yellow Pig Day – When you find a yellow pig, let me know.

July 18th – National Caviar Day – Because one can never have enough overpriced fish eggs

July 19th – National Raspberry Cake Day – Only if Pillsbury makes a raspberry cake mix.

July 20th – Ugly Truck Day – That’s every day in Texas.

July 21st – National Junk Food Day – Perhaps this is redundant since we had fried chicken, chocolate, sugar cookies and raspberry cake already?

July 22nd – Ratcatcher’s Day – I will happily celebrate anyone who catches rats.

July 23rd – National Hot Dog Day – Also known as “Maizie after she catches 5 frisbees in a row”.

July 24th – Amelia Earhart Day – We should always celebrate people who get lost.

July 25th – Threading the Needle Day – Only if I can find my reading glasses.

July 26th – Aunt & Uncle Day – I expect presents.

July 27th – Take Your Pants For A Walk Day – Preferably with you in them. I suppose, after National Nude Day, we need this reminder.

July 28th – National Milk Chocolate Day – Not to be confused with July 7th.

July 29th – National Lasagna Day – I always crave a dish that you bake in an oven in July.

July 30th – National Cheesecake Day  – The Golden Girls must have started this holiday.

July 31st – Mutt’s Day – For those who missed out on National Hot Dog Day.

The Odd Days of June…

sunglasses

Ah, Summer. My favorite time of year. I live in Texas for a reason–I detest cold. So, grab your iced tea, sunglasses and ice cream, sit in your favorite lawn chair and learn about the weird days of June, according to Holiday Insights:

June 1st – Flip a Coin Day (You just flipped a coin about whether or not to read this, right?)

June 2nd – National Bubba Day (Let me guess–this holiday started in Texas.)

June 3rd – Repeat Day (Don’t tell the kids about this day as a favor to parents everywhere.)

June 4th – Old Maid’s Day (Puhleez let this be a holiday for celebrating a kids card game.)

June 5th – World Environment Day (Ummm….we already have Earth Day, so why?)

June 6th – National Gardening Exercise Day (I always do push-ups while planting.)

June 7th – National Chocolate Ice Cream Day (I’m in.)

June 8th – Name Your Poison Day (Death by chocolate ice cream works for me.)

June 9th – Donald Duck Day (Celebrate this day with quackers? You can stop groaning now.)

June 10th – Iced Tea Day (Again, I think this was created by Texans.)

June 12th – Red Rose Day (Hint, hint, hubby.)

June 13th – Blame Someone Else Day (I thought this was every day in Washington, D. C.)

June 14th – World Jugglers Day (Suggestion: Don’t juggle small babies.)

June 15th – Smile Power Day (Use that power on your dad. Yes, that was a hint, too.)

June 16th – Nursing Assistants Day (MaryAnn should not assist nurses. See why here.)

June 17th – Eat Your Veggies Day (Not even for a holiday. I’m sooooooo not in.)

June 18th – International Panic Day (Prozac manufacturers must love this day.)

June 19th – World Sauntering Day (I’m pretty sure marathon runners would not approve.)

June 20th – Take Your Dog To Work Day (Sorry, Maizie. I work at home.)

June 21st – National Hollerin’ Contest Day (That’s just a typical day at our house.)

June 22nd – National Chocolate Eclair Day (Much better than June 17th!)

June 23rd – National Pink Day (Not the color I normally choose to wear after eating eclairs.)

June 24th – Swim a Lap Day (More than 1 lap will be needed to counteract the eclairs.)

June 25th – Log Cabin Day (A time to buy more termite protection?)

June 26th – Forgiveness Day (Probably needed after June 13th)

June 27th – Sunglasses Day (Watch it rain this day.)

June 28th – Insurance Awareness Day (Trust me–I’m aware of insurance…and its cost.)

June 29th – Waffle Iron Day (Maybe stay away from the Waffle House today.)

June 30th – Meteor Day (What? You don’t celebrate fiery chunks of rock falling from the sky?)

The Odd Days of May…

Mother Goose?

Mother Goose?

Warning: Get a beverage first.

Normally, I would do an “Odd Days” post at the beginning of the month, but with my winter writing hiatus, I’m a little behind. So, since I just know you can wait no longer (yeah, right) for my commentary on the weird holidays of May, here goes:

May 1st – Mother Goose Day -This holiday celebrates fairy tales and does not celebrate goosing mothers, right?

May 2nd – Space Day – I’m sure we’re supposed to be focused on NASA, etc. on this day, but my mind fervently wants to put “Cadet” between Space and Day here

May 3rd – Lumpy Rag Day – I’m so relieved they finally made this a holiday–Smooth rags are just no help at all.

May 4th – National Candied Orange Peel Day – Since most December fruitcakes are composed of this stuff, why is it celebrated in May???

May 5th – Oyster Day – Since I’m not too fond of oysters, could we insert “Cracker” between Oyster and Day??? If so, I’m in.

May 6th – No Diet Day – Probably because I ate too many oyster crackers on May 5th.

May 7th – National Tourism Day – The ever-traveling hubby despises any day that encourages tourists to be tourists–just visit any airport from May to September and you’ll understand why.

May 8th – No Socks Day – Texans stopped wearing sox in April. Thus, this one must be for Midwesterners. It’s way too early for the northerners who might, emphasis on might, get to go sockless by the 4th of July.

May 9th – Lost Sock Memorial Day – Shouldn’t Lost Sock Memorial Day come before No Socks Day just naturally??? And memorial suggests the sock is not only lost, but also dead. I didn’t know that socks could be alive. But that just gave me an idea for a Mother Goose fairy tale.

May 10th – Clean Up Your Room Day – Because your mother is tired of your offensive alive socks all over your room

May 11th – Twilight Zone Day (Actually this is the correct labeling for May 9th–either that or having Star Wars Day on May 4th made the Twilight Zone fans a little jealous.)

May 12th – Fatigue Syndrome Day – Please note that this day came right after Mother’s Day.

May 13th – Frog Jumping Day – Is this the only day frogs should jump? Are you supposed to pounce on unsuspecting frogs? Are you supposed to play leap frog this day?

May 14th – Dance Like a Chicken Day – Had to be invented by a Texan since random Texans will instantly get in a circle to do the Chicken Dance when the appropriate music is played. No inebriation necessary…but probably helpful.

May 15th – National Chocolate Chip Day – I celebrated this day by consuming an entire large-sized bag of chocolate chips. It was my duty, right?

May 16th – National Sea Monkey Day – Because there just aren’t enough artificially colored brine shrimp in the world

May 17th – Pack Rat Day – Let’s not tell Hoarders about this day.

May 18th – No Dirty Dishes Day – Either this was invented by a mom who got tired of doing dishes after Mother’s Day or is an evil Communist plot by the paper plate industry.

May 19th – Boy’s Club Day – Ummm….and where, oh where is Girl’s Club Day??? Hmmmm….another evil Communist plot.

May 20th – Be a Millionaire Day – Is this when Bill Gates finally makes good on paying all of us for liking some status on FB?

May 21st – National Memo Day – To: Millionaires: From: MIP Date: May 21st, 2014 Re: We Hate You and Your Stupid Holiday on May 20th

May 22nd – Buy a Musical Instrument Day – Why? Because a pile of parents are tired of paying rent for their band kids’ instruments all year

May 23rd – Lucky Penny Day – The Unlucky Penny Union will be wanting equal time.

May 24th – National Escargot Day – I’m sensing a seafood theme here. See May 5th and May 16th.

May 25th – Tap Dance Day – Wear ear plugs?

May 26th – Sally Ride Day – Now, I’m sure this refers to astronaut Sally Ride, but my warped mind goes immediately to Mustang Sally by Wilson Pickett. You just sang, “Ride, Sally, Ride”, didn’t you??? 😉

May 27th – Sunscreen Day – This would have been more helpful on the day (earlier in May) when I endured a TCU graduation for 4 hours in the hot Texas sun. May 27th will probably still be “Recover from Sunburn” Day at my house.

May 30th – Water a Flower Day – I’m thinking that if you only water one flower on this day (and no other?), you won’t be seeing flowers at your house for very long.

May 31st – National Macaroon Day – I guess coconut is under-appreciated???
